The Underworld U.S.A. Trilogy, Volume II by James Ellroy is the concluding volume of Ellroy’s sprawling historical-noir trilogy and contains Blood’s A Rover. Set primarily between 1968 and 1972, the novel plunges into an America consumed by political violence, organized crime, racial conflict, revolution, and government corruption. Following the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the story brings together a young Los Angeles private investigator, a mob enforcer, and an agent working for J. Edgar Hoover, whose lives become intertwined with Joan Rosen Klein, a radical revolutionary. Their investigations lead through an armored-car robbery, missing emeralds, the Mob’s schemes in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, the Black Power movement, the Vietnam era, and the increasingly corrupt political world surrounding Richard Nixon. Combining real historical figures and events with fictional characters and conspiracies, Ellroy creates a brutal, paranoid portrait of late-1960s and early-1970s America.
