Our Legacy: From the Footpath to a Landmark

The story of New Book World is rooted in resilience, humility, and extraordinary determination—a journey that began with a single woman on the footpaths of Ghanta Ghar, Jodhpur.

In the face of immense personal loss, when our grandfather passed away and left behind three young children, our grandmother chose not despair but action. With no resources but unwavering resolve, she began working as a waste paper dealer on the roadside—an occupation few would consider, yet one she embraced with dignity.

In a remarkable show of courage, she wrote directly to then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, explaining her hardships. When Mrs. Gandhi visited Jodhpur, she personally ensured that this woman, standing tall amidst adversity, was allotted a permanent shop at the very spot she once sat on the footpath.

From that single shop grew Harish Book Seller, eventually expanding into six interconnected stores in Ghanta Ghar. While our father gravitated toward the world of books, his brother and mother remained focused on the waste paper trade. Over time, their hard-earned efforts led to the acquisition of multiple properties across Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and beyond.

In 1998, a new chapter was born—Book World at Jalori Gate, founded by our father, with books as both passion and purpose.

Today, we carry this legacy forward through New Book World, blending tradition with innovation. But even now, the original spirit continues—our grandmother, now the matriarch of our family, still sits at the store daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, ensuring that every detail reflects the values she built this legacy upon.

Her philosophy is simple: discipline, frugality, and relentless hard work. For her, even a ₹25 bike ride is a conscious act of savings, not just economics—a reminder that wealth is built not only from grand gestures, but from small, consistent choices made every single day.
