The Tommy Knockers by Stephen King (Grade - D)
A science fiction horror novel by Stephen King that explores the terrifying consequences of an alien presence hidden beneath a quiet New England town. The story begins when novelist Bobbi Anderson discovers a strange metallic object buried in the woods near her home in Haven, Maine. As she digs it out, the object slowly reveals itself to be an ancient alien spacecraft.
The ship emits a mysterious influence that transforms the townspeople. They become extraordinarily intelligent and capable of creating astonishing inventions, but the price is steep: they gradually lose their humanity, their free will, and even their physical forms as they fall under the spacecraft's control.
Bobbi's close friend, the troubled poet Jim "Gard" Gardener, is one of the few people resistant to the alien force. Battling alcoholism, personal demons, and the growing horror around him, Gard becomes humanity's best hope of stopping the transformation before it spreads beyond Haven.
Blending cosmic horror, psychological suspense, body horror, and science fiction, The Tommyknockers examines themes of addiction, obsession, technological ambition, and the dangers of sacrificing humanity for power. While Stephen King has been critical of the novel in retrospect, many readers appreciate its imaginative premise, unsettling atmosphere, and ambitious scope.
