“A Love of Long Ago” by Ruskin Bond is a short story that captures the author’s nostalgia and reflections on past love. The story revolves around a fleeting romance Bond had in his youth. It beautifully illustrates the bittersweet emotions of first love—its tenderness, idealism, and eventual loss.

The narrator, looking back after many years, recalls meeting a girl at a social gathering. He is struck by her beauty and charm, and they share moments of genuine connection. However, like many youthful romances, the relationship remains unfulfilled due to the circumstances of life, leaving the narrator with a sense of longing and reminiscence.

Ruskin Bond's signature style, with its simplicity and lyrical prose, creates a melancholic but heartfelt mood throughout the story. The narrative focuses not only on the brief affair itself but also on how memories of love from long ago continue to evoke powerful emotions, even as time passes. It’s a reflection on how the innocence and passion of youth leave lasting imprints on the heart.
