A classic collection of supernatural tales by Amyas Northcote, first published in 1921. It is Northcote's only work of fiction and is regarded as one of the hidden gems of the Golden Age of English ghost stories. His writing is often compared to that of M. R. James, emphasizing subtle dread, atmosphere, and psychological unease over graphic horror.

The collection contains thirteen ghost stories, including memorable tales such as "Brickett Bottom," "In the Woods," "The House in the Wood," "The Young Lady in Black," "The Late Mrs. Fowke," and "Mr. Mortimer's Diary." Rather than relying on shocking scares, Northcote builds tension through quiet English villages, lonely country houses, ancient woods, forgotten diaries, family secrets, and seemingly ordinary places where something profoundly unnatural lurks beneath the surface.

Many of the stories explore themes of guilt, curiosity, greed, and the consequences of disturbing forces that are better left alone. Ghosts, curses, unexplained apparitions, and sinister supernatural entities appear gradually, creating an atmosphere of mounting suspense. Northcote's restrained prose allows the reader's imagination to supply much of the terror, making the stories linger long after they are finished.

Although long overshadowed by better-known writers, In Ghostly Company has earned a reputation among horror enthusiasts as one of the finest overlooked collections of Victorian and Edwardian-style ghost fiction.
