Hooked by Asako Yuzuki (Grade - A)
A dark, psychologically intense novel of obsession and female friendship by Asako Yuzuki, and one of her major works translated into English following the success of Butter.
The story follows Eriko, a highly disciplined but lonely career woman working in a Japanese trading company. On the surface, her life looks perfect—stable job, supportive parents, and a carefully controlled routine. But underneath, she is consumed by isolation and a desperate need for connection.
Her attention becomes fixed on Shoko, a popular housewife blogger whose life seems the opposite of hers: messy, unfiltered, and emotionally open. What begins as admiration quickly turns into obsession when Eriko engineers a “chance” meeting and forces a friendship. As their relationship deepens, the bond between them becomes increasingly toxic—blurring into surveillance, manipulation, and emotional control.
As tensions rise, the novel explores how modern female identity is shaped by loneliness, social media performance, and the pressure to appear “complete.” The relationship between the two women slowly unravels into psychological warfare, exposing insecurities, resentment, and emotional dependency on both sides.
Unlike conventional thrillers, Hooked leans more toward literary psychological fiction, focusing on internal tension and character dynamics rather than plot-driven suspense.
