Gainsborough’s Family Album is a richly illustrated art-historical study accompanying the first major exhibition devoted to Thomas Gainsborough’s portraits of his own family. Rather than focusing on his famous royal and aristocratic commissions, the book explores his more intimate portraits of his wife, daughters, sisters, other relatives, himself, and even his beloved dogs.

The book follows Gainsborough's family portraits across more than four decades, from his early career in Suffolk, through his years in Bath, to his highly successful London period. Alongside the paintings, it examines family relationships, marriage, parenthood, domestic life, and the changing meaning of family portraiture in eighteenth-century Britain.
