FAIRY TALE by Stephen King (Grade - C)
An epic dark fantasy novel by Stephen King that blends classic fairy tales with horror, adventure, and coming-of-age storytelling.
The story follows Charlie Reade, a kind-hearted seventeen-year-old who lives with his widowed father. After helping his reclusive elderly neighbor, Howard Bowditch, recover from an accident, Charlie gradually earns his trust and forms a close bond with Bowditch's loyal dog, Radar.
When Bowditch dies, Charlie inherits his house, a mysterious cassette recording, and an unbelievable secret: hidden inside an old shed is a gateway to another world known as Empis. This magical realm is filled with castles, mythical creatures, ancient prophecies, and unspeakable horrors. Once a flourishing kingdom, Empis has been corrupted by a dark curse, leaving its people desperate for a hero.
Determined to save both Radar and the kingdom, Charlie embarks on a perilous quest through enchanted forests, underground prisons, and haunted cities. Along the way, he faces terrifying monsters, impossible trials, and a ruthless tyrant while discovering the courage, compassion, and resilience within himself.
Unlike many of King's horror novels, Fairy Tale emphasizes fantasy and adventure while still incorporating his trademark suspense, eerie atmosphere, and memorable characters. It explores themes of heroism, sacrifice, grief, hope, and the enduring power of stories.
