Calcutta Yoga by Jerome Armstrong (Grade - C)
Calcutta Yoga: How Modern Yoga Travelled to the World from the Streets of Calcutta tells the largely untold history of how modern yoga developed in Calcutta (Kolkata) and eventually spread across the world. Jerome Armstrong traces the lives and influence of Buddha Bose, Bishnu Ghosh and Paramahansa Yogananda, along with other important figures who helped transform yoga from an Indian practice into a global phenomenon.
Based on extensive fieldwork, archival research and interviews, the book combines yoga history, biography, memoir and cultural history. It explores the development of Hatha Yoga and physical culture in Bengal and follows the connections from Calcutta to the United States, London, Japan and elsewhere, including the later development of Bikram Yoga and modern hot yoga.
