The Return of Sherlock Holmes marks Holmes's dramatic return after his presumed death at the Reichenbach Falls. It includes celebrated mysteries such as The Adventure of the Empty House, The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, and The Adventure of the Six Napoleons.

His Last Bow contains later Holmes stories, including espionage and international intrigue leading up to World War I. The title story presents an older Holmes serving his country in one final mission.
