Esio Trot by Roald Dahl is a charming and whimsical story about a shy, elderly man named Mr. Hoppy, who is secretly in love with his neighbor, Mrs. Silver. Mrs. Silver adores her pet tortoise, Alfie, but is frustrated that he doesn’t seem to grow. Mr. Hoppy devises a clever plan to win her affection by secretly replacing Alfie with larger and larger tortoises, all the while convincing Mrs. Silver that his "magical spell" is making Alfie grow.

The title Esio Trot is simply "tortoise" spelled backward, fitting with the playful and inventive nature of Dahl's storytelling. This short story features themes of love, patience, and gentle humor, complemented by Quentin Blake’s quirky and lively illustrations. The characters are both relatable and eccentric, with Mr. Hoppy’s shy yet cunning nature driving the plot as he helps Mrs. Silver in the most unusual way.
