A classic collection of Japanese ghost stories and folklore by Lafcadio Hearn, first published in 1904.

The title "Kwaidan" (also spelled Kaidan) means "ghost stories" or "strange tales." Hearn collected and retold traditional Japanese legends, supernatural tales, and folk beliefs, introducing many Western readers to Japanese mythology and culture.

The collection includes famous stories such as "Mimi-nashi Hōichi" (Hoichi the Earless), "Yuki-Onna" (The Snow Woman), "Mujina", and "Rokuro-Kubi". These tales feature ghosts, spirits, shape-shifters, curses, and mysterious encounters, blending horror with beauty, melancholy, and moral lessons.

Beyond the stories, the book also contains essays and observations about Japanese customs, beliefs, insects, dreams, and supernatural traditions.
